about

Ukulele drives a mid-tempo song about looking back on a life of ups, downs and growth with a sense of humor while admitting imperfection and realizing it amounts to a few people's happy & sad memories.

lyrics

"When I'm Gone"
Music & Lyrics by Scott Cooley.

A lot of girlfriends broke up with me, I made it easy for them to do
But I broke up with a lot of them, maybe even broke a heart or two
Well I straight-up quit a whole lot of jobs, got fired from some too
Hung my hat in a whole lot of places, seemed I was always on the move

You can laugh about the crazy things I did when I'm gone
You can cry about the nice guy that I was when I'm gone
You can sigh about how little I tried when I'm gone
Shake your head about the stupid things I said when I'm gone
And maybe you'll remember this here song
Maybe you'll listen and sing along
When I'm gone

I've cheated, lied and stolen, should've learned more than a lesson or two
Tried to poison, torture and destroy myself, but every time I tried I'd lose
My big mouth got me in big trouble, had more than my share of the blues
Did as little as possible to get by, made it a challenge to coast and cruise

You can laugh about the crazy things I did when I'm gone
You can cry about the nice guy that I was when I'm gone
You can sigh about how little I tried when I'm gone
Shake your head about the stupid things I said when I'm gone
And maybe you'll remember this here song
Maybe you'll listen and sing along
When I'm gone

Learned to be hard-working and honest, somehow along the way
Lived and loved, lost and won, then this old wild man got tame
Settled in and settled down, even learned to filter what I say
Can't help but regret so many mistakes, I replay in my head every day

You can laugh about the crazy things I did when I'm gone
You can cry about the nice guy that I was when I'm gone
You can sigh about how little I tried when I'm gone
Shake your head about the stupid things I said when I'm gone
And maybe you'll remember this here song
Maybe you'll listen and sing along
When I'm gone
